Okiem, Gipsy Kings by Andre Reyes, The Green Room Jazz Club Series, Sandra Sahi, Soprano Isabel Luna and NOON Band to be streamed live

Since the launch of its online programme in March, Dubai Opera has been curating various online lineups featuring a host of contemporary local and international artists and musicians. Complementing the existing online sessions, a new musical series has been launched streaming live every Monday from the Dubai Opera Studio. Dubbed ‘The Green Room Jazz Club Series’, the new performances range from jazz to funk and blues, and everything in between.

In a new collaboration with At the Top, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Opera is treating the audiences to live streaming from the level 125 of the world’s tallest building as Iraqi-Belgian artist Sandra Sahi performs surrounded by the magical views of Dubai.

Mark your diaries for these performances to look forward to on Dubai Opera’s social media channels.

Okiem – Thursday, June 18, 8pm

Okiem is a composer and pianist whose music is described as cinematic classical. He uses the piano, synthesisers and orchestral instruments to create his unique sound. His performance will feature original pieces from his debut album ‘Xiro’ as well as new pieces from his upcoming album due for release later this year. In this performance, Dubai Opera’s audience will enjoy the music and sounds he creates right from the intimacy of his home.

Gipsy Kings by André Reyes – Saturday, June 20, 8pm

Gipsy Kings by André Reyes is a gipsy French musical group. Founded by the Reyes family, the Gipsy Kings trace their lineage to Gitanos – Spanish Romani people from the Catalonia region of Spain. Their infectious Latin rhythms are a heady concoction of rumba, flamenco and salsa.

They first captured the world’s imagination in 1987 with their album “Gipsy Kings” that became a genuine phenomenon. Certified gold and platinum around the globe, the album introduced the world to “Rumba Gitano”—South America’s rumba rhythm married to the fleet attack of flamenco guitars with hits such as “Djobi Djoba”, and “Baila Baila”.

Led by Andre Reyes, the Gipsy Kings will meet Dubai Opera’s audience again in an exclusive online session that will include iconic anthems like ‘Bamboleo’, ‘Volare’, ‘Djobi, Djoba’ and many more.

The Green Room Jazz Club Series – Live from the Dubai Opera Studio every Monday at 7pm from June 22 to 27

Founded in 2018, The Green Room Jazz Club is a ‘pop-up’ jazz club that was created with the UAE’s top residing jazz talent in mind. It has proved to be a massive success in the Dubai Nightlife scene and received nominations for various awards.

The studio series will feature some of the city’s best musicians and bands, broadcasting live from the Dubai Opera Studio. Musicians will perform a mixture of jazz classics through the ages, original works, edge on some funk, deliver some light-hearted soul and bring the blues. Expect to hear roaring sax solos, screaming trumpets, furious fingers across the keys, silky smooth vocals, and more.

Sandra Sahi (Streaming Live on Dubai Opera’s Instagram from At the Top – Burj Khalifa on June 25 at 6 pm)

Iraqi-Belgian artist Sandra Sahi is a pop and R&B artist based in Dubai. Twenty-year-old Sandra is known for her diversity; she will be performing in English, French and Arabic in her upcoming songs. She has specialized in the Oriental Pop genre, which she believes could potentially have an important place in the music industry as a perfect medium to unite everyone from around the world.

Isabel María Cañada Luna – Wednesday, July 1 at 8pm

Spanish soprano Isabel María Cañada Luna started her voice and piano lessons at a very young age. Her love of Opera would flourish during her formative years, leading her to pursue a degree in voice at the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid. By the age of 24, Isabel had already graced the stages of the Konzerthaus Berlin and the Berliner Philharmonie, in addition to winning a place in the Ciclo de Jóvenes Cantantes 2015 by AAOM.

Currently based in Dubai, Isabel has performed in theatres all around the world, like the Teatro Real in Madrid, Dubai Opera, Abu Dhabi National Theater, Tianjin Grand Theater, and Yangzhou Concert Hall, among others. Isabel has been performing in her production, Echoes of Spain since 2016, as well as singing and appearing at the Dubai Expo 2020 commercial, the film of Barry Purves Plume and TV shows like El Hormiguero. Isabel will perform on Dubai Opera’s Facebook account on 1st July at 8pm.

NOON Band – Thursday, July 2 at 7pm (Streaming live on Instagram from the Dubai Opera Studio)

NOON is an “experimental Oriental” band formed in the UAE as ‘an audio approximation of the Emirates’ cluttered cosmopolitanism and contemporary, borderless ethos.’ Made up of three players from different cultural and musical backgrounds, the instrumental trio bravely embodies the hackneyed idea of East/West musical fusions. Their music is distinguished by the oud, the most typical international marker of all things Middle Eastern, sonically framed by electric bass and drums, and freed by the improvisatory impulses of jazz. NOON’s collective sound is distinctly global with shades of funk groove, African and Indian percussive rhythms and electronic effects. They call it “experimental Oriental” – a knowingly exotic abstraction, for sure, but of the very best kind.
