As springtime begins in Japan, the country waits eagerly for sakura (cherry) trees to burst into blooms. Once they do, the world flocks to the Far Eastern nation for the famous cherry blossom season as cities become engulfed in blush tones and trees in the countryside form floral pink canopies.
Hike in the foothills of Mount Fuji and you’ll witness an ocean of cherry blossoms beneath. While it makes for a remarkable sight, the season is but fleeting, with most blooms lasting only a week or two. The sakura zensen or cherry blossom line starts from Kyūshū in the south mid-March and advances towards the north, passing Kansai and Kantō, before culminating in Tōhoku at the end of April.
